This story is a bit of a long one, but if anyone is a lifetime Philadelphia Eagles fan, your story is probably pretty long. I was born in 1967, so I did not really start watching the ” BIRDS” until I was 7 or 8 years of age. After a little math, I’ve figured well over 600 plus games, not missing a single one, including 2 Super Bowl defeats in 1980 and 2004. Oh yes, there have been amazing moments and players, trials and tribulations (a 2-4 record in conference championships games), 3 Miracles of the Meadowlands, 4th and 26th, Buddy Ryan, The Fog Ball, T.O., for who for what, and time is yours. I have watched amazing players – Jaws, Bergey, Montgomery and Carmichael, Reggie, Seth, Wes and Jerome, Randall, Byers, Jackson and Willie T, McNabb, Westbrook, Trotter, and Dawkins. The list can go on and on and on.
Which brings us to 2018. Our amazing leaders, Coach Doug Peterson and Carson Wentz (soon to be the franchise’s greatest QB of all time), led us to an 11-2 record. Then, the injury occurred and for a moment hope was lost, but St. Nick came to the rescue.” PHILLY PHILLY ” was etched in history and a 60-year parade wait happened on Broad Street. Thank you, Jason Kelce, you even outdid Chase Utley!
I have been painting local sports heroes for as long as I can imagine. Schmidt, Dr. J., Reggie White, Rocky, AI, and many others! I was so inspired by this team, and it’s now coined underdog spirit, that it was a no-brainer to create something large and grand the week of the Super Bowl. I am great old friends with Philly Fashion Diva Joan Shepp. Whenever one of our teams are ascending, I call her to paint proudly in the giant shopping window of her store on Rittenhouse Square. What was born is entitled ” NEXT DOG UP!” A giant pop montage of the Lombardi Trophy that morphs into a helmet not with a player’s face but that of a German Shepherd dog. Rocky Balboa and cartoon icon, Underdog, flank the silver-leafed trophy with stenciled bold text, ” CHAMPIONS”, running along the border. Within 2 weeks post the championship game, the original piece sold for $10,000 from inside the Bellevue Hotel where it was on display by Nicole Miller boutique.
I met the incredible Darren and Phyllis Sudman about 10 years ago when he kindly introduced me to his foundation, Simon’s Fund. In 2004, their precious son, Simon, entered eternal life due to what is now known as Long QT Syndrome, a condition that causes sudden cardiac arrest in children. Their visionary life saving non-profit was started to assure that no other parent would ever lose a child to a detectable treatable disease.
This season, Darren and I planned to showcase a larger than life original embellished print of “NEXT DOG UP” (40/50 inches) that has been signed by over 25 players from the Eagles Super Bowl team, including Coach Peterson, Wentz, Foles, Ertz, Cox, Jenkins, and others. For more information on opportunities to follow and purchase this fantastic piece for a 100 percent donation to Simon’s Fund, please contact us via www.perrymilou.com or www.Simonsheart.org
