New Painting Commission by TATEL Restaurant Group

Sometimes, your phone rings all day with no results. That is until you get a call from representatives of two global sports icon, Raphael Nadal and Christiano Ronaldo. I’ve completed some murals in my life but none to the degree of this celebrity hierarchy. TATEL is an amazing high-end Spanish gastronomy that offers live entertainment. The brand currently has flagships locations in Miami and Ibiza, with new locations set for London, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia in 2019.

Tatel Arrives in Philly

Philadelphia’s Boyd Theatre opened on Christmas Day in 1928 and was designed by the architectural firm of Hoffman-Henon. Famous for its opulent Art Deco lobby and extravagant marquee, the 2,500-seat theater was the largest in the city’s history. It housed blockbuster films, such as Gone with the Wind in 1940, The Wizard of Oz in 1939, and High Noon in 1952. The theater’s long, incredible history is well documented and preserving its architectural jewels was a must, especially for TATEL who is taking ownership of their new restaurant.

Painting on Glass

I’ve never painted on glass before except for a few odd sign jobs post-college in the neighborhood so I knew that this was going to be quite a challenge. A 300-square-foot facade window was the proposal for Tatel’s new restaurant. The Art Deco-etched window is comprised of the original theater design and broken down into more than 20 individual pieces that fit together like a puzzle. Working alongside Philly glass giant, Eureka Glass, and etching artist, Christina Sioutis, has been a true honor and privilege. After weeks of trial and error, we decided on using 1 Shot Enamel to paint the glass in four colors. The result has been six weeks of meticulously following precise etched lines and patterns while applying the enamel with a clean opaque finish.

Stay Tuned!

In the upcoming week, I will happily update the installation photos as the mural gets completed for the opening. I just hope Raphael shows up at the property.
