I was greatly honored to receive a commission to create the DiBruno Bros 75th Commemorative Painting 2014 from the incredible family whose legacy has had a huge impact on Philadelphia culinary history. Danny and Joe Dibruno, the DiBruno brothers, landed in the United States through Ellis Island in the mid 1930’s. They came with a dream to open their own family grocery store on the humble cobblestone streets of Philadelphia, a trip to Switzerland having inspired their passion of all things cheese. Their culinary visions were groundbreaking, educating, and provided the highest quality of products polished with love for the people of our fine city. The result is DIBRUNO BROTHERS, a cheese and specialty shop that has been open for three generations, featuring innovation that has paved the way towards branding one of the most beloved storied streets, THE ITALIAN MARKET, in America.
Bill Mignucci Jr, Joe’s grandson and owner of Di Bruno’s came to me and said, “Perry, I want you to paint our legacy, combine our love of family, our culinary visions, and our love for Philadelphia into one masterful piece.” I loved every brushstroke on this painting, It evoked found memories of my trips as a child to famed 9th street. Di Brunos is a great jewel to Philadelphia, I congratulate them with great pride and love!
THE CONCLUSION: DIBRUNO BROS 75th COMMEMORATIVE PAINTING 2014
There was an event held in May that celebrated the culinary pioneers Di Bruno Bros. 75th Anniversary, held at 9th and Montrose Streets, beside their iconic first location in South Philadelphia’s landmark Italian Market. There was of course delicious foods, pop-up opera performances, as well as speeches honoring the business by City Councilman Mark Squilla and State Senator Larry Farnese. The unveiling of the commissioned work I painted of the family and business created quite a stir; the masterpiece exhibits everything that DiBruno Brothers, has built: family connection, an enterprising business and strong culinary influence.
This commemorative painting is hung as part of the permanent collection at the new DiBruno Brothers location in Rittenhouse Square.
